The Armed Forces Service Medal is an award that was authorized by Executive Order 12985 on January 11, 1996. It’s given to members of the United States armed forces who participate or have participated in a U.S. military operation that is considered significant by the Joint Chiefs of Staff after June 1, 1992. To be eligible for the award, service members must not have encountered any foreign armed opposition or been in imminent danger of hostile action.
